Lancaster ED874 Information
Type: Lancaster
Serial Number:   ED874
Squadron: 106
X1D: ZN-?
Operation: Berlin
Date 1: 2nd December 1943
Date 2: 3rd December 1943
Further Information
Serial Range ED303 - EE202 This aircraft was one of 620 Lancasters ordered from A.V.Roe (Chadderton) in 1941 and built from Nov42 to Jun43 as 129 Mk.1s and 491 Mk.111a ... The Mk.1s were initially fitted with Merlin 210 and the Mk.111s with Merlin 28 engines. ED874 was delivered to No.97 Sqdn Apr43, joining No.106 Sqdn 20Aug43.
ED874 took part in the following Key Operations: With No.97 Sqdn as OF-L, Dortmund 23/24May43; Düsseldorf 11/12Jun43; Bochum 12/13Jun43. With No.106 Sqdn, Berlin 3/4Sep43; Mannheim 23/24Sep43; Hannover 18/19Oct43; Berlin 18/19Nov43; Berlin 22/23Nov43-aborted; Berlin 26/27Nov43; Berlin 2/3Dec43-Lost.
There is a suggestion that this aircraft was battle-damaged against Bochum 12/13Jun43 which would account for the lack of operations until 3/4Sep43. Unable to find provenance for this. However, it is duly noted. When lost this aircraft had a total of 294 hours.

Airborne 1640 2Dec43 from Metheringham.
Crashed at Lindenberg, a small town some 14 km NE from the centre of Berlin and on the main autobahn to Bernau.
Sgt Harmes has no known grave, the others are buried in Berlin 1939-45 War Cemetery.
